The brown and pink shades are made using Cutch, the wood from the Khair tree. Native to South Asia the wood chips from the tree are boiled until a thick molasses forms and once cooled hardens to form the dye chips. The Khair tree is central to many South Asian communities as the tree is used for food, cattle feed, medicine and firewood as well as being a n easy to use natural dye.
Unlike regular azo dyes which contaminate the local rivers and local ecosystems, natural botanical dyes like cutch are safe to work with and non-toxic when washed away in the processing.
